From the beginning of production the Colt Government Model had a C prefix serial number. In late 1949 Colt started using the C as a suffix, as on your friend's Colt. According to Clawson the last pistol with a C prefix serial number was C240287.Government Model with early C suffix serial number. I bought this pistol years ago before I had learned anything about Government Models. The mainspring housing is replaced and these are the grips which came with it. Over time I realized the SN 240195-C was unusual in that it was below the published breakpoint between the C prefix and suffix.13. Look under the firing pin stop, as I think there may be a partial serial number there. It appears the original serial number may have been defaced, as the surface area around it looks to have been messed with.
