Surprisingly, my bloodied unarmed melee build did really well (better than in the normal game IMO). The fog makes stealth effective, and you can't see far enough for ranged combat to be really useful anyhow. Plus, I don't run out of ammo.

Maybe pipe weapons if your head cannon is that your vault dweller is good with their hands, fashioning weapons out of scrap. For armour, wood and leather armour feels like the right vibe for me.
